Doctor of Philosophy (Arts and Social Sciences)

Candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research and write a thesis on an approved topic, supported by a supervisory academic team. The program is offered in a range of disciplines, including art history, economics, education, communications, archaeology, modern languages, sociology, and cultural studies This course is for those with a first or second class honours bachelors degree, a research masters, or a masters by coursework with a research component (75% or above). Alternatively, significant experience and high level qualifications in the field may be accepted.

Entry requirements

  • To be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Arts and Social Sciences), you must have completed the equivalent of one of the following in a subject area related to your proposed research area:
  • bachelors degree with first class or second class honours or, masters degree by research
  • masters degree by coursework with a substantial independent research component such as a thesis, dissertation or research project, with a minimum overall pass average of 75% or above
  • demonstrated appropriate experience and alternative qualifications at a high level of excellence in the proposed field of research.
