Universities and TAFEs in Melbourne and Victoria

Your guide to Universities, TAFEs and studying in Melbourne and Victoria

Victoria has a wide range of universities to choose from, each with varying specialties and entry requirements. Within Melbourne itself, the city boasts two Group of Eight universities, as well a wide variety of TAFEs, private institutions and many other higher education providers.

Studying in Mbleourne

Melbourne has a reputation for being artsy and slightly alternative, with a more casual ambience than bright and beautiful Sydney. It has a great deal to offer culturally, with countless cinemas, theatres and galleries and an active live music scene. Cheap and tasty cuisine from around the world is plentiful thanks to Melbourne’s diverse population.

The city's education providers are equally spread out, so there is no one area known for its dense student population. In Melbourne, you can study just about any course you can think of. While Melbourne is not renowned for specialising in one particular field or another, different institutions will have their own strengths and priorities.

Studying in regional Victoria

Regional Victorian study centres range from the seaside cities of Geelong and Warrnambool to the south-west, Mildura and Albury–Wodonga on the banks of the Murray River in the north to charming regional centres such as Bendigo and Ballarat. The choice between providers depends a little on your desire to live (or, if you are already a regional resident, remain) in a certain area.

Regional Victoria is traditionally known for its course offerings in agriculture, forestry and education, although students still have access to most of the study fields on offer at metropolitan campuses, from arts to engineering, law and medicine. You should also consider that some providers and campuses offer the opportunity to access fields of study not readily available in metropolitan areas, like outdoor education or health courses with a regional focus.
