Universities and TAFEs in Adelaide and Darwin

Your guide to Universities, TAFEs and studying in South Australia and the Northern Territory

Studying in South Australia

South Australian students are spoilt for choice, with a number of campuses in and around Adelaide’s city centre. There are also providers further afield at Whyalla on the upper Spencer Gulf and Mt Gambier, the state’s second-largest city.

Undergraduate degrees are available in all the general disciplines (humanities and science, for example) and the professions, including dentistry, law, medicine and engineering. There is plenty more on offer in the niche fields too — you could find yourself studying winemaking, hospitality, acupuncture, theology or forensic chemistry.

South Australia is as famous for its festivals, food and wine as it is for the stunning desert and beach locales, all in easy reach of Adelaide. It has the best of both worlds: it offers all the conveniences and excitement of a large city, but with a slower pace and a more relaxed lifestyle. For students, Adelaide is big enough to offer all the essentials of a large city, but small enough to be less hectic and overwhelming than Sydney or Melbourne.

Studying in the Northern Territory(NT)

Most students study in Darwin, enjoying a relaxed outdoor lifestyle in Australia’s only tropical capital city. Darwin’s population is incredibly diverse, and the city attracts many students from interstate.

Drawing on the unique local environment and culture, the NT is known for its expertise in specialised areas such as tropical and desert science, Indigenous knowledge, Indigenous health and Southeast Asian studies. There is also a good selection of courses in general areas such as business, education, law and nursing. The main provider of higher education in the Northern Territory is Charles Darwin University, which has campuses and study centres throughout the Territory and provides higher education courses for Indigenous Australians through the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education.

Darwin has an energetic multicultural art and market scene, as well as one of the world’s most outstanding natural and cultural destinations — the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park. Arnhem land and WA’s Kimberly region are also within easy reach. Just south of Darwin is litchfield National Park, where you’ll find beautiful waterfalls, rainforests and the region’s famous magnetic termite mounds.
