Why Mature-Aged Students Are Turning to University for Career Fulfilment

For many Australians, university isn’t just for school leavers, it’s a pathway for career growth, personal fulfilment, and new opportunities at any stage of life. A recent study by Year13 and UNE explored the motivations, barriers, and decision-making of more than 1000 students aged 18-65. Here are some key insights from the research.

Why Are People Choosing to Study?

Mature-age students have a range of both professional and personal motivations. The top five reasons given by respondents were:

  • Personal fulfilment (52%)

  • Career change (44%)

  • Earning additional qualifications (41%)

  • Career progression (40%)

Professionals change careers up to 7 times throughout their lives and flexible university courses are making it possible to level up or follow new passions.

The Biggest Barriers to Study

At the same time, the study found that there are common barriers for mature-aged students. The biggest challenges found from the study were:

  • Finances (52%)

  • Work commitments (29%)

  • Family responsibilities (22%)

However, universities like UNE offer scholarships, flexible study options, and financial support to help make study more accessible.

These Challenges Aren’t Stopping Students from Studying

Despite the barriers, most mature-age students see university as a valuable investment:

  • 58% say a degree is extremely or very valuable.

  • Only 7% feel it’s not worth the cost.

Overall, students looking to future-proof their careers, or follow their passions thought the experience of studying was worthwhile, especially with the availability of remote education.

Online Study is a Game-Changer

For mature-age students, online learning is a top priority. The research found:

  • 64% prefer online study over on-campus learning.

  • 75% say flexibility is the biggest benefit of online uni.

  • 68% value not having to commute to a physical campus.

  • 55% appreciate access to courses that aren’t available locally.

What are the most popular courses for mature-aged students?

Most respondents selected a course of interest first, then found a university that offers it. The most popular study areas include:

  • Medicine & Health (25%)

  • Education & Social Work (19%)

  • Arts & Social Sciences (10%)
